Surprise!
We were not planning any holidays in August, but a long weekend popped up,
giving my Italian craving for sea and sun a chance :)
Since
there are no cheap flights to the South of Italy or Europe, our choice fell on
Trieste, as it looks interesting and special, but also small enough to be
visited in a couple of days, and within comfortable driving distance from
Budapest.
So the
plan should roll like this:
- Travelling on Thursday with Blablacar - a trip of approximately 5-6 hours at the same price of a back-breaking bus trip by night
- Sleeping for three nights with Airbnb - slightly cheaper than hotels/residences on booking.com and more unique
- Friday in Trieste - a quick Tripadvisor search suggests to lose your way in the alleys of the city centre, enjoy the view of the sea by Piazza dell'Unitá, take the old tram to the Opicina, and visit the castle of Miramare (perhaps by boat). I love the threads on Tripadvisor!
- Saturday between Gorizia and Trieste - in Gorizia I want to go to a legendary restaurant, Trattoria da Gianni, where I've been many years ago. A mindblowing experience of delicious traditional Italian/Balcanic food and the largest portions I've ever seen. This could take a half day, and then we would spend the rest sunbathing and swimming in the sea.
- Sunday back to Budapest with Blablacar
I spent
just a few hours many years ago in Trieste, my memories are a confused mixture
of steep hills and majestic buildings reminiscent of Imperial Austria. And to
top all of this, the beautiful Gulf of Trieste on the Adriatic Sea.
We're getting excited!
